West Valley Women Luncheon

Vice Mayor Cline and Mayor Hall attend the West Valley Women Networking Association event.On Tuesday, February 1, Mayor Hall joined me at the West Valley Women Networking Association’s Bring a Gentleman to Lunch event at the Arizona Broadway Theatre. This event was sponsored by the Glendale Chamber of Commerce and discussed ways in which they support business in the community. This organization endeavors to promote professional women who desire to be successful and connect with the community. Members share information, ideas and contacts.

Essay Winners

Three talented students were recognized at the Council Meeting on Wednesday, February 15, as the winners of the Dysart Schools / City of Surprise essay contest where they were asked, “Why is ‘My Surprise’ an extraordinary community to be a part of?”

MLB Announces Spring Training Delay

The City of Surprise is disappointed to share that Major League Baseball has officially announced a delay to Spring Training. Tickets bought through an authorized outlet to canceled games will be refunded or exchanged. MLB is working to get the game back on the field as quickly as possible. COVID-19 Testing Sites

Free COVID-19 testing.In response to increasing demand for COVID-19 testing, Maricopa County has opened multiple community testing sites across the Valley including a new location at Ak-Chin Pavilion staffed with resources through FEMA. The new daily PCR testing site at Ak-Chin Pavilion is located near the Loop 101 and I-10 freeways and is open seven days per week from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. This site takes people with and without appointments, and allows people to either drive through or walk up for testing.

Volunteers Needed for Project Connect

Human Services Campus logoThe Human Services Campus is partnering with the Salvation Army and the City of Surprise to bring back the Project Connect event on Tuesday, March 22 from 8-3 p.m. at the Salvation Army Northwest Valley, 17420 Avenue of the Arts. Project Connect is a one-day, one-stop event to assist individuals experiencing homelessness connect to a variety of services. Volunteers are needed! 4th Annual Surprise Spring Training 5K/1K

Get your Major League juices running at Surprise Stadium on Friday, March 4 with the 4th Annual Surprise Spring Training 5K and 1K Fun Run. This event will begin at 7 p.m. and take you on a scenic, evening run through the City before heading back to the ballpark to cross the finish line at the field! All runners will receive a Spring Training Race t-shirt, finisher medal and a “buy one, get one” lawn seat voucher to a Spring Training game. Now Recruiting for Surprise Youth Council

Surprise Youth Council logoThe City is recruiting new members for Surprise Youth Council (SYC) – a group of trailblazing teens who are making a difference in their community! SYC members serve the community by collaborating with local leaders, including Mayor and City Council, to give a voice on City issues and help solve youth issues. Students who are currently in grades 7-11 may apply, as long as they reside in or are attending a middle school or high school within Surprise city limits; or are attending a Dysart Unified School District high school. Applications are being accepted now through April 8 and consist of a video submission no longer than 90 seconds.

Free Tax Preparation Services

The City of Surprise has again partnered with A New Leaf to facilitate the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides free tax preparation assistance. The program will be available until April 18 at the Surprise Resource Center and through April 13 at Riverboat Bingo. To make an appointment call the Surprise Resource Center at 623.222.1600.

Spring Eggstravaganza

Eggstravaganza egg hunt.Celebrate the spring season with us on Saturday, April 16 from 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Surprise Recreation Campus Kansas City Royals Practice Fields! Children 10 and under are invited to take the field in search of more than 50,000 plastic eggs filled with candy and toys! This FREE family event will also feature face painters, balloon artists, inflatables and more. Food and drink are available for purchase and there will be a minimal fee on some activities.

Gates open at 7:30 a.m. and hunt times are as follows:

  • 8:20 a.m. – 2 and under*
  • 8:50 a.m. – 3 – 4 year olds*
  • 9:20 a.m. – 5 – 6 year olds**
  • 9:40 a.m. – 7 – 8 year olds**
  • 10:00 a.m. – 9 – 10 year olds**
  • 10:20 a.m. – all ages**
