District 2 Update – February 2022

2022 Vice Mayor

I am humbled and honored that at the regular meeting on January 18, my fellow Surprise City Council members selected me to serve as Vice Mayor. Per city code, City Council must select a Vice Mayor to serve on an annual basis no later than January 30. The Vice Mayor acts on behalf of the Mayor in the event of absence. I will continue to serve you as your District 2 representative, as well, as I was elected to City Council in August 2020 to serve a four-year term beginning January 2021. My term expires on December 31, 2024.

2022 Surprise Spring Training

Spring Training 2022The 20th Surprise Spring Training Season will kick off on Saturday, February 26 with the annual Surprise Sundancer Charity Game at Surprise Stadium, featuring home teams – the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals. The 2022 schedule features games every day from February 26 through March 26, with a double header on February 28.

Season ticket, mini-plan packages and single-game tickets are on sale now at SurpriseStadium.com. By choosing one of our multi-game ticket packages, you will receive unique perks, such as savings over the individual game ticket price and choice of the best available seating locations.

Free Tax Preparation Services

The City of Surprise has again partnered with A New Leaf to facilitate the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides free tax preparation assistance. The program will be available until April 18 at the Surprise Resource Center and through April 13 at Riverboat Bingo. To make an appointment call the Surprise Resource Center at 623.222.1600.

360 Physical Therapy Ribbon Cutting

On Monday, January 24, Mayor Hall, Council Member Winters and I joined 360 Physical Therapy for a ribbon cutting! Clinic Director, Anthony Kuhl, hosted the ceremony in honor of the Grand Opening of 360 Physical Therapy, located at 11340 W. Bell Rd., Suite 101. Thank you for choosing Surprise!

A New Leaf Adds Transition Housing

A New Leaf logoThough primarily known as a nonprofit that provides shelter and other services for domestic violence victims, A New Leaf offers a range of programs for Valley homeless, families, foster children and those in need of financial advice. The Arizona Department of Housing awarded $1.14 million to A New Leaf to support the West Valley Housing Support Center in Surprise. Construction is set to begin on the $1.5 million project in April 2022 with opening expected by September. The center will offer temporary housing to women and families as well as housing support services to far-West Valley residents in need of permanent housing, employment and other related services. Budget Kick-Off

The City of Surprise FY2023 budget building process has begun! The Finance Department will give a series of presentations to City Council over the next few months, and the City Manager will release his Recommended Budget in April, which will be followed by public review and then final adoption of a balanced budget in June. Please stay tuned to future Council Meetings for the overall development of the budget and upcoming annual process.

Sunday in the Park

Sunday in the Park returns to Mark Coronado Park! Join us on February 6 from 3 – 7 p.m. for live music, various food trucks, an assortment of beer and wine, and family-friendly entertainment such as bounce houses, face painting, a trackless train and more! Surprise to Host USTA Tennis Series

  • February 4-6: Adult 65 and Over 6.0 and 9.0 Men and Women
  • February 11-13: Adult 65 and Over 8.0 Men & Women

My monthly Meet and Greet will be 6 p.m. on February 22 at Sun City Grand in the Pima Room, 19781 N. Remington Dr. I look forward to discussing the latest city news and answering any questions you have.

City Council Meetings

The next regularly scheduled Council meetings are February 1 and 15 at 6 p.m., and City Hall is open to the public for in-person attendance. You can also watch live on surpriseaz.gov/surprisetv, the Surprise City Gov Facebook page at facebook.com/cityofsurprise, or on Cox channel 11.

Keep it beautiful, Surprise!Help spread the word about keeping our beloved community clean. The “Keep it beautiful, Surprise” campaign consists of videos, social ads and a webpage with information on how you can get involved! Please also consider volunteering at the upcoming Surprise Day of Service on March 20 at 8 a.m. To register, please contact Larry Garcia at larry.garcia@surpriseaz.gov. Spring Training

Spring Training has begun! MLB has approved our Capacity and COVID mitigation plan, which includes social distancing, seating pods, limited capacity of about 25%, and increased safety and sanitization protocols. For ticket information and a schedule of game times, please visit surprisestadium.com.

Speed Limits in Surprise

The City of Surprise has a Street Speed Limit Map where you can easily view the speed limits of our streets. The map can be found on the surpriseaz.gov website here. Speed limits are established based on careful examination of all the factors affecting safe driving in that stretch of roadway.
